CAMRA Radnorshire Branch 2024
Following our successful AGM in late 2023 the local CAMRA Branch is trying to become more active than has been possible since the problems caused by COVID.
MONTHLY MEETINGS and PUB VISITS
One new venture is a series of meetings and pub visits each month attempting to visit and support as many local trading pubs and report back to all.
February 2024
Radnorshire CAMRA members meeting/session on February Saturday 17th 2024.
Five members were at the start in Arvon Ales in Llandrindod Wells, with one more popping in later after attending a funeral.
Arvon Ales manager Chris was very helpful and chatty.
Three members then went on to the Temple Bar in llandrindod Wells, which was busy but we got a table.

THE SEVERN ARMS PENYBONT
This famous old coaching inn on the A44 at Penybont has had its troubles in recent years ( not least a devastating fire which nearly destroyed the building). Having survived the fire and later on COVID the SEVERN ARMS is under the family ownership of the 'Collards'. This is is neat full circle as the family originally owned the pub in the early C20th. Lots of work has been done ; especially updating the kitchens, parking and garden area ( now with fantastic riverside views). The pub has a long tradition of serving ales and is primarily fronting Wye Valley Ales products.

Saturday 27/01/2024 CAMRA Radnorshire went to Knighton to see how things have changed since Covid.
Five of us (Chris. Terry, Dave D, Colin and me) arrived at The Banc 5 Broad street at the same time, just past 12.15pm.
For me it was my first visit, although Craig has been open for 5 years. It has a nice ceiling and very decorative old heating radiators. The old money vault ( id=32677) is used as an eating area.
Cask Beers were, Ludlow Gold and Wye Valley Moonshot.
Then onto the chippy to take into Watsons Ale House, 24 High Street..
We met Carter who has taken over the bar, he has a very positive attitude to real ale. The toilets have been moved from the front room to the back of the building and replaced by an extended bar. It works, as the front room looks spacious and busier.
Beers were, Purple Moose Wacky, Glamorgan Welsh Pale ale and one other.
Later Terry phoned The Kinsley, Station Road and arranged for the place to open 30 minutes early, otherwise they had
7 minutes to get a drink before the train back to Llandrindod Wells.
John Owen has lived 5 doors away all his life and been at the pub for 30 years, sometimes as a pub and a B+B at other times.
Beers were, Timothy Taylor Boltmaker Bitter, and Sharps Atlantic Bitter.

As we are having these excursions on the THIRD SATURDAY EACH MONTH, the next one is Saturday 17th February.
Meet 1.00pm at the Arvon Ales, Llandod. Depending on the beer choice we can always move on to The Temple later.

SIGN UP FOR NEW GROUP FOR THE DEAF.
I am trying to start a CAMRA deaf group so we can meet at beer festivals and have beery talk in sign language or whatever suits us.
I only started training in sign language four years ago so forming this group would be good practice for me.
The other aim of the group is to try and introduce real ale to the deaf community as most are accustomed to drinking bland fizz at their local deaf club or meet up.

The CONSERVATIVE CLUB, Llandrindod Wells welcomes card carrying CAMRA members as guests.
WATSON' ALE HOUSE, Knighton.
This is the second micro pub in Mid Wales.
It opened in December 2017. In previous times it was a tea room, antiques shop and butchers.
The 2 room pub has 3 changing real ales, local perry and their own cider on hand pumps.
You can buy food from Knighton Plaice chippy next door to eat with your drinks.
It is near to the clock tower at 24 High Street, Knighton, LD7 1AT.

Each week they put on a barrel (36 pints) of Real Ale.
When it's gone it's gone but can last until Wednesday.

They also have a selection of bottles.

The Radnor in New Radnor
has closed as the building is leaking and Steve Dunn the tenant has walked away.
A public meeting on 11th May met the owner who has agreed to get a valuation with a view to a possible buy out by the local community.
UPDATE 12/6/2016.
The owner has had a valuation done.
He refuses to say what it is to the community and will not get into discussions.
Does nothing to dispel the theory that he wants the place to fall down, so he can build houses.

Radnorshire CAMRA presented a Special Award certificate to
Arvon Ale House
in recognition of their First Year as a Real Ale and Cider Pub.

FFOREST INN, LLANFIHANGEL NANT MELON (A44)
New tenants in 2014.
There are lots of reports about their food and real ales being good quality.
MAY 2015.
The Greyhound at Llangunllo, the Arvon Ale House in Llandrindod and the Red Lion in Knighton,
have received accreditation from Radnorshire CAMRA branch.
This scheme aims to promote pubs that sell locally-brewed real ale and the
pubs have to agree to serve at least one locally-brewed real ale at all times.
The Radnorshire CAMRA definition of locally-brewed is a distance of 30 miles from pub to brewery, as the crow flies.

Arvon\ a-rvon, ar-von\: Noun.(old English) Friend of the People.
Laura and John have opened Arvon Ale House, the first micro pub in Powys.
This Llandrindod pub can be found near the Metropol Hotel, opposite Masco tool hire shop.
Their opening day was Wednesday 26th November 2014.
They say "Our aim is to offer a range of good quality, interesting cask ale, cider and perry".
They also serve soft drinks, hot drinks, wine and spirits.
Bottled ale and cider available.
Specialist whiskey range.
Also a range of bottled beers to take away and take away packs of their varied draught beers.
OPENING TIMES for 2016.
Monday: Closed.
Tuesday: Closed.
Wednesday:4 to 10 pm.
Thursday: 4 to 10 pm.
Friday: 4 to 11pm.
Saturday: 4 to 11 pm.
Sunday: 4-00 to 10-00pm pm.
The beer menu changes weekly.
